SENIORS: DIVISION 2A
Kilmoyley Athletic 0 – 8 Mastergeeha FC. Following on from last week’s 8-goal thriller in Kilbrean Park, the men from Mastergeeha bagged another 8 goals on the road in Mounthawk Park this week as we put in a complete performance against Kilmoyley Athletic.
First to score was Noel Moynihan directing the ball to the right past Kilmoyley’s keeper; followed by 2 fine goals from Gearoid Kerins. We went into the half time break 3 – 0.
As the second half started, the cheer of the day came when cousins, Conor and DJ O’Leary linked up to put DJ through for his first senior goal. Next up was a man in great form, Gearoid Kerins for his hat trick and immediately afterwards, Gearoid squared a beautiful ball for Eoin Horan to slot home number 6. The competition was well and truly over at this point and Jer Sheehan and Anthony Magner adding a further 2 goals before the end. From speaking to Manager, Ronan O’Sullivan, he was very proud of the lads performance, maintaining a clean sheet and looking back over the last 2 game weeks, our goals came from players across the squad. This result puts us into first place in the league and should be enough to put us into a league final. Scorers Gearoid Kerins Noel Moynihan Anthony Magner, DJ O’Leary, Jer Sheehan, and Eoin Horan
U-14 SHIELD ROUND 2
Mastergeeha FC 1 – 0 Inter Kenmare These two sides met each other twice this season where we lost one and won one, so this game was always going to be a close affair. We had the breeze to our backs for the first half and despite 3 shots on target, they were saved well by the Kenmare keeper. Kenmare had a few attacking opportunities but our defence of TJ Healy, Con Carroll, Dan O’Rahilly, Diarmuid Furlong and Danny Coffey, Jack Tagney marshalled them well. Throughout the second half, both teams had an equal amount of possession. The breakthrough came from a set piece when our centre back Diarmuid Furlong rose higher than everybody else to header the ball in the direction of the goal to put us 1 up. Kenmare stepped it up a gear but our midfield of Cian O’Connor, Cian Guerin, Aaron Buckley, Liam Horgan and Kieran Nagle worked hard to keep them at bay. We created chances with Bobby Gallivan and Emmet Spillane but we were not clinical enough to add to our 1 goal lead. We look forward to our next fixture in this competition.
Scorer: Diarmuid Furlong
There was cup action for 2 of our U-12 teams this weekend with third team getting a bye to the next round.
U12 JOHN MURPHY CUP
Mastergeeha F.C. A 2 - 6 Mek Galaxy F.C. .A tough score line on the boys in a game where a two-goal swing with about ten minutes to go finally took the game away from us in what was a real challenge against a strong MEK side. With the score line at 2-4 we came close to getting a third which would have thrown everything in the melting pot only for last gasp defending by MEK who then broke quickly to catch us on the break and finish the game. MEK started the stronger playing with the breeze and went one up within the first five mins. Our boys gathered themselves and immediately hit back with an equaliser following a great move down the wing with Rory O'Connor setting up James Kelly who finished coolly past the keeper. Against the strong breeze MEK blitzed us in the next ten minutes when they scored three quick clinical goals which to be fair to our lads, they could not have done a huge amount about. At this point we were really up against it but with a slight change in formation our boys rolled up their sleeves, never dropping their heads and put in a determined final 15 mins in the first half. Just before half time we gave ourselves hope following another good interchange this time on the opposite wing which ended with Ronan O'Connor who had just come off the bench finishing to the back of the net. Game on 2-4 at half time. MEK came on strong in the second half but our boys defending stoutly with Jack Ahern at right back being extremely tenacious in everything he did including working well with our keeper Odrian Carroll to deny MEK on two separate occasions. All the boys put in a huge effort chasing the game but it was not to be our day and, in the end, another late breakaway goal by MEK finished off the scoring. The game marked the return from injury of Jack Buckley which was a great boost for all the boys to see him back on the pitch alongside them. Thanks to MEK for a very sporting game and we wish them best of luck in the remainder of the Cup.
U12 JOHN MURPHY CUP
Mastergeeha F.C. B 1 - 5 Listowel Celtic B .We travelled to Listowel for the second cup game of the day where we were met with an almost hurricane strength breeze. In a very evenly matched first half Listowel took the lead after about 15 mins when we were caught on the break. We piled on the pressure there after playing with the breeze but we never threatened the Listowel goal as much as we would have wanted until Eoin O'Sullivan unleashed a clean struck shot from outside the box which found its way past the unfortunate Listowel keeper. Listowel took the lead a second time just before half time with a goal that looked very dubious the last past appearing to be played to a player in an offside position. Trailing at 1-2 and facing into the storm force breeze we knew the boys would be up against it in the second half. Against the breeze we found it extremely difficult to break down the field and as a result we spent most of the half defending with our lives. Eoghan O'Riordan was outstanding in the second half and led by example thwarting attack after attack. Evan O'Sullivan made two outstanding saves. Unfortunately, as the half wore on, we conceded on a number of occasions. It was not to be our day but the boys cannot be faulted for effort and they stuck at it until the final whistle. Thanks to Listowel for a very sporting game and we wish them best of luck in the remainder of the Cup.
Thanks to all parents/families for their great support at both games.
U10 CUP & SHIELD
Our shield team who defeated Killorglin U-10's on a scoreline of 2 - 1 in Killorglin. A fantastic team performance. Adam Warren opened the scoring for us with a great long range strike in front of the goal.
Derry O' Gorman soon followed with the inside of his right boot and taking full advantage of the wind blowing in on goal, he curled in for a cracker.
Scorers: Adam Warren & Derry O'Gorman
Our U-10 cup team were unlucky to go down 2 goals early but battled on to go 3 - 2 up and went in 3 all at break with 2 goals from Darragh Keane and a goal from Alan O Leary. This was a cracking game of tit for tat throughout. We came out in 2nd half on top with a goal each from Darragh keane and Alan O'Leary to lead 5 3. Once again wind was a huge factor that now favoured the home side and 2 long range frees found the back of our net. 5 all with a couple of minutes left saw Killorglin get a late winner. Result was 6 - 5 to Killorglin.
Scorers: Darragh Keane & Alan O'Leary
